BACKGROUND

Release was written after Jeff Martin watched a BBC report about the state of women’s rights worldwide, the song intended as an apology to women. After the release of Transmission the band continued the sentiment by releasing a charity single to assist the White Ribbon Campaign.

SPECIAL FACTS:

  • The Tea Party hid a piece of music in the pregap after release. A 15-second untitled piece consisting solely of electronically processed voices and sounds is located between tracks six and seven.
  • On Jeff Martins solo Album ‘The Ground Cries Out’, you can hear a reference to Release in minute 5:57 where he sings the song line “I want you to be free”.

LYRICS

I want the world to wake
I want to give you peace
I want to vindicate
You need to be released

Don’t want to hurt you
I need to make you see
If I desert you
It’s just to make you see

That I’m a man that’s weak
And I’m a man that’s lost
I gave it all away
To complicate the cost

Don’t want to hurt you
I need to make you see
If I desert you
It’s just to make you see
I’m not going to hurt you now
I need to make you see
If I desert you now
It’s just to make you see

I want you to be free
I want you to be free from me

VIDEO

The only b/w-video done by the band was partially shot in Toronto and Paris. The make-up worn by the band members harkens back to the style of the silent films of the 1920’s. The German Ulf Buddensieck directed the video and won a MuchMusic-Award.
