Gyroscope

Gyroscope

chapter_the_album

BACKGROUND

Gyroscope was inspired by the book ‘The Secular Grail‘ by Christopher Dewdney, Canadian poet, essayist and futurist, and also a friend of Jeff Martin at that time.

It’s basically a collection of aphorisms on the human condition and having to deal with the juxtaposition of the new deity being technology and the old ones, the organic ones. And also in this book, he equates a human being’s psychic equilibrium to something like a gyroscope and how the rate of spin in each particular individual is equal to their psychic energy. And like a spinning top, if outside forces affect it, it will incur a wobble and go off course. With human beings, forces like flattery or conversely, criticism, affect you in such a degree that you start to go off course and you start to shift.

Jeff Martin

SPECIAL FACTS:

  • Black metal band Melechesh recorded a cover version of Gyroscope for their 2006 album Emissaries. Listen to it here.

LYRICS

Come face to face with it
Pushed on your side
Lose all your self control
Worlds will collide

Inside out, you can’t cope
My gyroscope

Witness the fall from grace
You shed your skin
Change if it pleases you
Just don’t give in

Inside out, you can’t cope
My gyroscope
Quiet now she said
You’re waking up the dead
I cradle the excuse
In love with the abuse
I handle it with ease
It’s a dignified disease
Slow down

Soul searching breaks you down
You’ll never learn
Annihilate yourself
All things must burn

Inside out, you can’t cope
My gyroscope
