Army Ants

Army Ants

chapter_the_album

BACKGROUND

Totalitarianism is addressed in “Army Ants”. This song was inspired by the novel “We” by Evgenii Zamiatin (which is also spelled as Yvegeny Zamyatin) which warns us about the perils of a totalitarian system which not only curtails freedom of movement and speech but infringes on people´s ability to feel emotion and think creatively.

Book-Cover ‘We’
‘We’ is kind of a parallel on communism. It draws parallels with how communism basically rips out the individual from society, and also rips out the artistic freedoms of the individuals. It was actually the influence for Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’ ~Jeff Martin

The song got his name from the loop which can be heard in the background. When Burrows stepped in while Martin adn Chatwoord worked on this loop he said: “It sounds like a bunch of army ants marching towards a battle.”

SPECIAL FACTS:

  • The loop on Army Ants is from an Aphex Twin song called ‘Shiny Metal Rods’.
  • At this time, ‘Army Ants’ was often the opening song at live shows of the band.
  • Beside Transmission, Army Ants is the only song where the band uses backing tapes when playing it live.

LYRICS

Bring on the absolute
A walk on the water
Can lead you to slaughter

No one will feel you
No one will hear you

Bring on the brave new world
Tied to condition
A slave to submission

All that I need
Is a way to deceive
The eyes of the end
I will rise once again
And still shine on

Crawl on your hands and knees
Blind from the vision
The dawn of decision
